7 Bad Habits Of The Average Hookah Smoker
July 27, 2015

Hookah smoking is a delightful pastime but there is a definite learning curve when you first start. As a result of that learning curve, the average hookah smoker can develop some bad hookah habits. In this post we will shed some light on these bad habits and help you overcome them on your journey towards complete hookah mastery.
Dangerous Coal Transportation

Dirty Base Water

Lazy Bowl Loading
Loading a bowl of shisha is definitely more art than science. Different bowls and different shisha brands need to be packed in different ways to reach their potential. One thing that is universal when it comes to loading a bowl, is that if you just toss your shisha in the bowl with zero plan, it's not going to go too well. Sure, you'll get some smoke and some flavor, but your shisha won't cook evenly, will probably burn, and likely will not have great airflow. We've written about bowl loading techniques before (here, here, and here), and if you search youtube you will find tons of brand specific, and bowl specific loading tutorials. Knowledge is your friend and a perfectly packed bowl will make your next session the best one yet.Lazy Foil Stretching

Improperly Lit Hookah Coals

Aggressive Hose Handling
Nothing makes a hookah owner more nervous than someone aggressively handling their hookah hose. Every jerking movement could send those scorching hot coals flying, or your hookah crashing to the ground. The hookah hose is an extension of the hookah itself, and should be treated as such. Your hose is attached to hot coals and fragile glass, and should be treated as such. When smoking, be wary of any tangling of the hose, the length of the hose, and the general stability of the hookah itself. Keep those things in mind, don't wave the hose around haphazardly, respect the hookah, and you will be fine.Too Much Water In Your Base

I would add a couple other tips...

NEVER transport a hookah with coals on top, always bring the coals to the hookah and use a METAL container to transport coals.

A Kloud Lotus or an Apple bowl prevents coals from rolling off the top of the bowl, I never use foil anymore.

And, well, I know most people won't follow this advise but... intoxicants and hookah dont mix :-).

To add onto the hose jerking issue and bring another one up; I use either my traditional KM hose or a silicone D Hose that doesn't bend or flex easily. So it's very easy to teeter-totter my hookah with a quick jerking movement or even just a careless drop of the hose. Respect others property and definitely respect your personal well being because hot coals are a "bit" worse than burning yourself on a cigarette.

And now onto the second issue that involves cigarettes; do not ash or put your cigarettes out in my tray. I don't want that nasty garbage anywhere near my pipe. Especially not on it. Gets all grimy and smells bad. Not to mention if I put a coal down, I don't want to worry about burning the filter and smelling it.

Be respectful.

Another bad habit to add is when someone you know wants to smoke hookah, but you know they aren't committed to more than a few puffs during the session. It's important to let guests know that this is a hookah sesh, not shorts on a cigarette. I can't tell ya'll how many times my girlfriend wants to smoke hookah, takes 2 or 3 rotations of a single short puff,, then wants to go do something else. She then begs to pack new shisha and change the water out later that night to have another 4 minute session. It's a waste of shisha, money, and time.

Let your guests know that a proper session is going to require some committed time.
